Music magazines are very popular nowadays but due to the market being dominated by rock/indie music magazines, some people are missing out if they don't like the genres. For example there are no R&B/Hip-hop/older pop on sale in the British market at the moment. Most of the mainstream music at the moment is pop/R&B so I feel it is important to reflect this by creating a magazine to fill the gap in the market. Most music magazines can be found in the majority of supermarkets such as: Tesco, Sainsbury's, ASDA, Waitrose and Morrison's. They can also be found in the majority of newsagents in most villages. Due to this and my questionnaire results I will place my music magazine in a supermarket because this was the most popular place people answered to buy the magazines from. However newsagents were also fairly popular so I may think about expanding into newsagents in the future to gain maximum exposure to the public. No one said they were interested in buying a music magazine online therefore I wouldn’t sell the magazines over the internet. I was quite surprised at this result because the internet is becoming more and more popular with a lot of people shopping online however it seems that people prefer to see magazines before they purchase it.
I feel there is a gap in the market for an older style modern pop magazine aiming at both genders. The reason for this is because the leading pop music magazine on the market at the moment is Top of the Pops. I feel this magazine is aimed at much younger girls from the age of about 10- 13, therefore there is no pop magazine on the market for boys of any age or older teenager girls. However ‘Q’ magazine does include pop but isn’t specific to this genre because it is mixed with rock/indie style music too. The main age group I will aim my magazine is from 16- 19 year olds (possibly above 19 years old too.)
I would want my magazine to be placed amongst all of the other magazines because I am confident that it will stand out from its competition because it is the only music magazine on the market for older style pop. As my target market is older teenage females I will locate it on the shelf near other female gossip magazines so that they notice the new music magazine. The magazine shelfs are usually located near the exit in a supermarket so that people can pick one up on their way out of the shop or on their lunch break when getting their lunch so my magazine will be located in this area. Due to no other magazine on the market like this, I feel it will sell well no matter where it is located in the supermarket.
