Potential font ideas for title

FONT 1: This font looks bold and bright to link into the pop genre my magazine is. The purple isn't too bright so it still would appeal to an older audience. However the blur makes it look slightly blurry and less neat.

Font 2: I like this font because it is different from the others. I like the bright turquoise because it stands out and will appeal to my target audience. I like how the L is larger than the other letters because it looks unique.

FONT 3: I like this font because it is very large and stands out. I feel this will look good on the front cover of the magazine because it is very bold. However I also got this from 'Dafont.com' so wont be able to modify it and change the colour.

FONT 4: I found this font online at 'Dafont.com' I like the simplistic style because I feel that it won't take the emphasis off the central image. I like how all of the letters are the same height because it makes it look neat and bold. Although I don't know if I will use this font as it is from the internet, I can't customize it on serif and make it into different colours therefore I think it may be too dull for my vibrant pop magazine.

FONT 5: I like font 4 but felt it was too dark which is why I made it slightly lighter. However I don't feel this has the same affect as the bright blue therefore will probably choose the bright blue. I like the large L because it gives it a more unique and edgy look. Before I decide I will get the opinion from some of my target market as to whether they like the font.

FONT 6: This is my favourite font. I like the bright blue and the darker glow so I tried them together. I feel this font stands out and will catch the reader's attention. However I don't know if this font will be too dark and full for my pop genre of magazine. But it makes it look more for older teenagers which is what I wanted to achieve. If I decide to use this font, I would put brighter colours on the page in order to show the pop genre of the magazine and to make it more bright and fun.

FONT 7: This font is bold and eye catching which matches the name of the magazine 'Loud' (because loud has connotations of vibrant and bright) I feel this bright blue colour will stand out more than the lighter blue on the front cover and it doesn't make the magazine look too young and girly. I like the silvery glow which the font has because I think it makes the font look more sophisticated, brighter and 3D which I like.

FONT 8: This font is similar to the other ones in that it is rounded and 'bubbly'. I like this style because it is appropriate for a pop genre. However this lighter blue looks quite appealing but doesn't stand out as much as the bright blue. I tried a darker glow on this font and felt that it worked well because it helps it stand out more. I staggered the letters which I like because it looks more unique however it ma draw too much attention to the title and take the attention off the central image.

Planning mindmap

I created 8 areas which are neccesary to plan. I started off with coming up with different ideas for the name of my magazine. My favourite name is 'LOUD' because I feel this represents the pop genre because it is loud and bold. The connotations of the word loud is bright and bold and is a one syllabal word which creates a quick and abrupt sounding word. The reader will be able to immediatley read it on the shelf and decide whether to buy it. It will also stand out from the other magazines due to the instant and bold name which comes across to the reader. However I also like 'LOUDER' but it isn't as abrupt and shocking as 'LOUD'. 'TVBtunes' (the very best tunes) also was one of my options because I liked how it stood for something. However it could attract a younger audience than what I am aiming for and sounds quite cheesy. The TV may also make it sound like a television magazine which is why I am not going to choose this for the name of my magazine. Pop vibe was another suggestion which I liked because it clearly portrayed the genre of my magazine however would appeal to a much younger girl I feel. 'Bass' and 'Hitz' were also some ideas but I felt this would be more appropriate for a Hip- Hop/drum and bass magazine rather than pop. I liked the idea of calling the magazine 'Fresh' but again I felt it would give off the connotations of R&B/Hip- hop.
The next area I looked at was the colour scheme of my magazine. I liked the idea of having a bright colour with silver to make it look more sophisticated and older to appeal to older female teenagers. I'm not going to use bright pink as one of my main colours because this will make the magazine a much younger style which I don't want to achieve. I like the idea of navy and silver, purple and silver and blue and purple. However if i use bright blue and bright purple this may also look too young therefore I think I would choose either purple/blue/navy with silver. I want the background of my magazine to be a plain light colour so that the attention is focused on the central main image and the large name. The title is either going to be purple or blue with a silver glow.
I then looked at the contents page. I will have large numbers of the same font used for the name on the front cover and also have them in either blue or purple. I will then briefly explain what each page has on it.
I thought it was important to suggest various cover lines for my front cover to relate to my double page spread. I like the idea of '2012 is going to be my year' because when I do the interview for my double page spread I can ask the artist about how they will achieve this and I feel it will create an interesting article for the reader to read. I also liked the idea of 'I will never go back to how I used to be' because then the reader would become interested in what has happened in the artist's past and hopefully read on.
For my main image on the front cover I want a sophisticated female looking directly at the camera in order for my target market of older teenager girls to relate to the artist. I will ensure that her clothing, hair and make up fit with the pop genre of the magazine and link in the house colour scheme used for my magazine. On my contents page I will have the same artist but in a different postition/background to emphasise that this is the main article and the same for the double page spread.
I haven't decided whether I want a slogan for my magazine yet but if I do I like the idea of 'Newest, hottest, loudest' and 'Turn it up louder'. I feel it is important for the slogan to relate back to the name of the magazine.
The last item I looked at was any other items for the front cover. I am going to use a couple of pugs to highlight specific information because I feel this feature is successful in catching the reader's attention. I will also write the names of specific well- known pop artists on the front cover so that the reader is more inclined to buy the magazine in order to find about more about their favourite artist. I will then include pull quotes from another article included in my magazine of 'How to make sure you get the hottest concert tickets of the year' because this may interest some readers who enjoy going to concerts and therefore attracting them to read about it.

Second Questionnaire analysis

I felt it was neccessary to construct a second questionnaire because I wanted to ask specific questions about the genre of music magazine I am going to do. However this time I asked a niche market of 15 people rather than a broad range of 30 people. I asked 15 females aged between 15- 19 because this is going to be my target market for my magazine so I felt it was important to see what would appeal to them to make them buy it.

Everyone in my questionnaire said that they felt there is a gap in the market for an older style pop magazine because the only pop magazine on the market at the moment is Top of the Pops which is aimed at much younger girls. Therefore I feel that this is a good idea for my magazine.

The majority of the participants said they would prefer for the magazine to be specific to their gender which is why I have chosen to aim it specifically at females rather than both genders. By aiming at specific genders I can use fonts and images which relate to females making them want to buy the magazine, rather than aiming at both genders.

A lot of my participants said that pinks, purples, greens, blues and blacks would be suitable for a female pop magazine. However I don't want to main colour scheme to be pink because this could make the magazine seem targeted to a younger female audience. Therefore blue, purple and silver will be my main colour scheme with pink to highlighint specific points and black helping to tone it down and make it look less crowded and more sophisticated.

Most of my participants said they would prefer for the double page spread to be in an interview style rather than an article style. This means I will ask the artist specific questions which will hopefully interest my audience to read on.

Finally my last question asked whether my audience would prefer a female of male on my front cover. They said that they would prefer a female artist. This would help my target audience to relate to the artist.

From Mrs S

Some useful detail here, but is there enough to help you design your own?

How research will inform my planning

Music magazines a very popular however there isn't a range of genres available on the market. The majority of magazines available are rock/Indie. For example: Q, Kerrang and NME are all a similar genre which means some people are missing out if they don't enjoy this particular genre of music.

From looking at my questionnaire results I can see that the majority of my participants were female and aged between 15- 19 years old. Therefore I am going to aim my magazine at older female teenagers above the age of 15. The results showed that most of my participants feel that there is a gap in the market for a pop music magazine. Therefore I am going to do a pop genre music magazine aimed at older teenagers rather than young girls like Top of the Pops is. Most of the participants said they would be willing to pay between £2.00- £2.50 for a music magazine which I think is a reasonable price. I will include special offers such as Itunes vouchers in the magazine because the people who I asked said they would be more willing to buy the magazine if it had offers included. I also am going to include a list of when and where all the live upcoming pop concerts are as participants said this would be helpful.

My second questionnaire is going to be aimed at a niche market of around 15 people. I feel it is neccessary for me to do a second questionnaire because my first one was very broad and helped me deciding on a genre whereas the second questionnaire was based on the pop genre already been chosen. I am going to ask females between the ages of 15-19 years old specific questions relating to a pop music magazine. I feel this important to ask my target market because I want to ensure they will be attracted to my magazine and buy it. It will help me to decide on colours and names which will appeal to my target market who will hopefully be purchasing and reading the magazine. It will also give me various of ideas of what my target market are interested in for the double page spread.

By analysing already existing magazines on the market, I could see what features music magazines use. For example both magazines use pull quotes to attract the reader to the main article. I will use this feature on my front cover because I feel it is a good way of making the audience want to read on and will help link my double page spread to the front cover. Pugs are also a popular feature used on the already existing successful magazines in order to separate information and highlight key facts which are intended to attract the audience to purchase the magazine. From looking at the contents page I can see that they are mostly laid out in clear columns with the page number located next to the each title. Each title then has a brief sentence underneath telling the reader what the article is about so they can decide whether they want to read it or not. There are also smaller images of other artists which are included in the magazine, which attract the reader. Therefore I will lay my contents page out similar to the ones I have analysed.
Overall the graphs have helped me to aim at a specific target market and choose a genre and by analysing the real media artefact's it has helped me to see the essential features of a music magazine which help a magazine to sell and promote an artist successfully.

Product Placement

Music magazines are very popular nowadays but due to the market being dominated by rock/indie music magazines, some people are missing out if they don't like the genres. For example there are no R&B/Hip-hop/older pop on sale in the British market at the moment. Most of the mainstream music at the moment is pop/R&B so I feel it is important to reflect this by creating a magazine to fill the gap in the market. Most music magazines can be found in the majority of supermarkets such as: Tesco, Sainsbury's, ASDA, Waitrose and Morrison's. They can also be found in the majority of newsagents in most villages. Due to this and my questionnaire results I will place my music magazine in a supermarket because this was the most popular place people answered to buy the magazines from. However newsagents were also fairly popular so I may think about expanding into newsagents in the future to gain maximum exposure to the public. No one said they were interested in buying a music magazine online therefore I wouldn’t sell the magazines over the internet. I was quite surprised at this result because the internet is becoming more and more popular with a lot of people shopping online however it seems that people prefer to see magazines before they purchase it.
I feel there is a gap in the market for an older style modern pop magazine aiming at both genders. The reason for this is because the leading pop music magazine on the market at the moment is Top of the Pops. I feel this magazine is aimed at much younger girls from the age of about 10- 13, therefore there is no pop magazine on the market for boys of any age or older teenager girls. However ‘Q’ magazine does include pop but isn’t specific to this genre because it is mixed with rock/indie style music too. The main age group I will aim my magazine is from 16- 19 year olds (possibly above 19 years old too.)
I would want my magazine to be placed amongst all of the other magazines because I am confident that it will stand out from its competition because it is the only music magazine on the market for older style pop. As my target market is older teenage females I will locate it on the shelf near other female gossip magazines so that they notice the new music magazine. The magazine shelfs are usually located near the exit in a supermarket so that people can pick one up on their way out of the shop or on their lunch break when getting their lunch so my magazine will be located in this area. Due to no other magazine on the market like this, I feel it will sell well no matter where it is located in the supermarket.

Real Media Artefacts 'Q' magazine

Analysis of front cover:
The main colour scheme of the front cover is red, white, gold and black. It is essential to use these colours in every issue of Q magazines so that loyal reader's can feel like they are building a relationship with the magazine because they can always associate and know that the specific colours are used for the 'Q' magazine. These colours relate to both male and female therefore showing the magazine is aimed at both genders. The gold is used to highlight specific points on the front cover such as ‘Green day’ to grab the audience’s attention and to emphasise that a well- known famous band is included in the magazine. The gold colour symbolises that it is special and exclusive to the magazine such as the ‘Q awards’ because gold is a rich and wealthy colour. The red colour scheme is used throughout the magazine to link it all together. The red is a noticeable colour and has the connotation of danger edginess and rock but also seductive to show the mix between the genres of pop and rock/R&B. The black helps to tone the bold colours down and the white is used to keep the emphasis on the central image. The pug positioned at the centre right of the magazine isolates specific information so reader’s can see it quicker and easier and become attracted when they first see it on the shelf. Take That are a well- known popular band who everyone knows which is why they have been chosen to be the front cover. The public will all immediately know who they are and promotes them as well as the brand of the magazine. The main image of the magazine has to be a well- known artist to ensure reader's will recognise them. The central image of Take That is of them all piled up on top of each other with them all smiling and laughing. This image is fun and shows the genre of the magazine is fun and entertaining pop and not serious hard rock. They are all dressed in the same colour to show them as a band and that they are together. The black may represent toughness and masculinity and shows the rock genre of music.
The logo of the magazine is placed at the top left of the magazine so the reader can clearly see the brand of the magazine before they purchase it. It is important to include the logo so that readers can immediately know what genre the magazine is and always associate it with the brand of magazine. The word ‘exclusive’ makes it seem as though the magazine is special and is the only magazine which include what Q includes. This therefore makes the reader want to buy it because they think they won’t be able to read the information anywhere else. The examples of major bands and artists such as Eminem and Linkin Park are listed at the bottom of the page to attract the reader’s attention. If the reader likes a particular band/artist listed at the bottom of the page they are more likely to buy the magazine to read about them.

Analysis of contents page:
The house style of white, red and black has been continued into the contents page. The logo is again positioned in the top left of the page to highlight the brand of the magazine and so that reader's don't forget which brand of magazine they are reading. The logo is repeated throughout the magazine perhaps because there are similar magazines on the market such as NME which uses the red colour scheme too. The title is clearly located at the top of the page so readers know it is the content page and can find what they are most interested in. The issue number is next to the title on the right to show how many issues of the magazine have been published. This could also be a promotional tool to show how good there reputation is because they have been on the market for a number of years. If a reader notices that a magazine is on it's 293rd issue, they are more likely to trust the magazine and purchase it because they realise how popular it is. The issue number is also used if people want to find a specific issue of the magazine that they enjoyed. A different image of Take That, takes up most of the left page to emphasise who the main article is about. Take That is a world famous band who have been releasing singles for a number of years and are enjoyed by mature adults as well as younger adults. The same band is used as the front cover to show it is the main article and shows it is from the same issue. The largest page number on the page is next to the image to show the reader that the main story of Take That is on that specific page and to again emphasise they are the main artists included in the specific issue of the magazine. There are different images of well known artists such as Rihanna shown on the contents page with a page number next to them. This helps the reader find the article about their favourite artist rather them flicking through the magazine trying to find it. It also tries to attract the reader by showing them glimpses of well- known artists so they want to find out more about why they are there. Down the left hand side of the page, there is a list of the different articles included in the magazine with a page number next to them which are separated with red lines to make it clear that there are different articles throughout the magazine. The sub titles are in bold with brief information underneath in a smaller font so the reader can quickly read through it to see if they would be interested in reading the full article. The right hand side column shows the ‘regulars’ articles which are featured in Q magazine in every issue. These articles are also separated by red lines to clearly divide the different features of the magazine.

Analysis of double page spread:
The red, white and black house colour scheme is maintained throughout the magazine and the double page spread. This links the whole magazine together and ensures the reader remembers the colours so they can associate the specific colours with the brand of the magazine and immediately find it next time they want to purchase the magazine. The large image of Cee- Lo Green on the left hand side of the double page instantly draws the reader to the page and shows who the article is about before the reader even begins to start reading. The large image is meant to be recognised by reader's because if they are interested in the genre of music the magazine includes, they are expected to know who the artist is. This is the reason why the title only says 'Green' rather than the artists full name. The reader is supposed to know who 'Green' is without even being told the full name. The artist is wearing a very bright coloured top to draw attention to him and to show he is a bright and bold person and that he is the most important thing on the page. The artist is wearing a lot of jewellery and sunglasses which suggests he is edgy, unique and fashionable. The image fits with the mixed R&B/pop/rock genres the magazine is. However the chain he is wearing around his neck suggests a rap genre rather than rock/R&B which was surprising, but was probably used to emphasise his fashion/trendiness. The title of the article engages the reader and tries to make them read on by giving a glimpse of what is included in the article. Within the title, ‘Cee- Lo Green’ is highlighted in red to grab the reader’s attention as he is a very popular artist so are more inclined to read on. The red writing stands out more than black writing so that the reader can see it straight away. This helps attract the reader to read the article because they can find out about their favourite artist. The drop- caps ‘T’ and ‘A’ are used so the reader can straight away find where the starting point of the text is and again they are in black to link in with the rest of the article to show it all connects together. The page is laid out in two columns so it can be easily read. It looks more sophisticated than having 4 or 5 columns because the it looks like more writing which reflects the magazine being aimed at adults.

Real Media Artefacts 'Top of the Pops' magazine

Analysis of front cover:
The main colours scheme of the magazine is pink and purple. The bright pink represents the fun and girliness of the magazine and clearly shows that it is aimed at young girls. There white background is used so the reader can focus on the central image and the writing. There is black used for some of the fonts to tone it down a little. The title of the music magazine is right at the top in large, bright pink font so that the reader can immediately see what the brand of the magazine is. The title straight away gives a clear message about what genre of music the magazine includes.
The examples of specific artists are shown at the bottom of the front cover so the reader can see if their favourite artist is included in the issue of the magazine, making the reader want to buy it to read about them. Many rhetorical questions are used to engage the reader and make them want to read on (therefore purchase) and find out the answer to the questions. The main, large image of the artist is located in the centre of the magazine and takes up most of the page so the reader is directly attracted to it. The artist is wearing pink clothes with white hearts to link into the girly pink colour scheme of the magazine. Her facial expression directly looks at the reader. She is standing with one arm down by her side and one arm up by her face which looks like she is inviting the reader to read the magazine. There are also smaller images of famous artists so that if the main image doesn’t appeal to some people, they can look at the smaller images.
Words such as ‘Shocking’ make the reader interested because they want to find out what and why it is shocking. Words such as ‘Exclusive’ make the magazine seem special and like it is the only one on the market including an interview with Cher Lloyd. The barcode, price and issue number is located at the bottom left of the page because it is the least important item on the page however is a legal requirement. The quote ‘Why I’ll never get used to fame!’ is next to the main image of the artist to show the article is about her. The reader becomes interested making them want to read the whole article.

Analysis of Contents:
Overall this contents page is very crowded with a lot going on. This again reflects the younger audience it is aimed at. The house colour scheme of pink and purple is continued into the contents page to link the whole magazine together and to appeal to young girls because they are 'stereotypically' expected to relate and like the colour pink. Yellow suggesting brightness and fun is also used to highlight important parts of the text to attract the reader’s attention to it. The smaller image of the front cover is used with arrows pointing to parts of the front cover and showing what page they are on so that the reader can quickly find the pages they feel that they are most interested in. Various images of the famous artists and bands are dotted around the page in order to attract the reader because they can see that their favourite artist/band is included in the magazine. The images of the clothes and shoes are samples to see if the reader likes them and if they do they can turn straight to that page to find out how to buy them. The image of 'One Direction' boyband is included to appeal to young teenage girls. The title of the page isn't clearly labelled 'contents page' but instead 'Inside the mag...' this is is more entertaining than just simply saying 'contents page' like most of the magazines do and is appealing more for younger girls because it is a simple sentence. The font of the title looks like handwritting which again suggests the younger audience who are still at school and can relate to the handwritting font. The contents page is split into 6 different sections each with sub headings so the reader can clearly choose what they want to read about. However by having so many columns makes it look quite young and childish because there is less writing under each sub- heading. The title of each item is in bold with the page number clearly located to the left of it. There is a very brief sentence underneath each title to give the reader an idea of what every article is about. 'We love boys' suggests how young the audience is for the magazine.

Analysis of Double page spread:
The main colour scheme of this page is pink, yellow, blue and white with pink being the most dominant colour to appeal to young girls. The blue font on the left hand side of the page links both of the pages together due to the artist wearing the same colour for his suit. The blue may also resemble the the artist's masculinity. The whole right hand side of the page is taken up by a large image of the artist so that the reader can see who the article is about without even starting to read the article. The artist is wearing a smart suit with sunglasses which is an unusual style but shows the uniqueness and edginess of the artist. The word 'exclusive interview' at the top of the page make the reader think that they haven't read anything like it before and that they will actually see what the artist is like because it is a personal interview with them. The smaller image of the artist and his mum makes the article very personal to the artist. The caption is used to tell the reader who the artist is with in the photo and briefly whyt it links in with the text. The interview is set out in 11 seperate areas with a sub heading of the question the editor is asking the artist so that the reader can choose to read the answers to the ones they are most interested in. The advertisement at the bottom of the page helps to promote the main artist even more so that if readers have enjoyed reading about the artist they can know when his new single is released and download it. Lastly, the pull quotes are used throughout the article to emphasise the important and interesting parts of the text so the reader is more likely to read the whole of the article.

Questionnaire Results

1. I chose to include this question because I
wanted to see if the gender of the participant
affected their answers about the music
magazine. From the graph I can see that the
majority of my participants were female.

2. I asked how old the participant was because
I wanted to know who I should aim the
magazine at, because this would affect
what the front cover looks like and what
information the magazine has inside.

3. From this graph I can see that the majority of
participants do read and buy music magazines,
however a small portion do not.

4. This graph shows that the majority of my
participants said they read music magazines
every few months. Quite a few people also
said they do buy them monthly. Not many
participants said they buy magazines more
than once a month.

5. This graph shows that the most of my
participants said they would most likely buy
a music magazine from a supermarket. Some
participants said they would buy the magazines
from a newsagent, and a few people said they
would buy from stores such as HMV and
WHSmith. No one said they would buy a
music magazine online.

6. From this graph I can clearly see that most
of my participants are willing to pay
£2.01- £2.50
for the magazine, which I think is a reasonable
price for a music magazine.
A few of the
participants were willing to pay
above £3.00 but
no one was willing to pay
above £4.00.

7. This graph shows that more than half of my
participants would be interested in subscribing
to a specific music magazine which they enjoy,

in order to save them money. However, some
participants said they wouldn't be interested in
a subscription perhaps due to them not buying
the magazines enough in order to save them
money

8. From this graph I can see that pop and R&B/
hip- hop are the most popular genres of music.
Indie, drum and bass and grime were also quite
popular. Rock and dance were the least popular.

9. I think this graph is one of the most important
because it shows what my participants actually
want in terms of a music magazine. The answers
were similar to the previous question with pop
and R&B/Hip- hop being the genre's which people
feel there is a gap in the market for. Indie was
the second most popular, with drum and bass,
dance and grime being the least popular.

10. From the graph, most of my participants said
they would rather famous, well- known artists
to be included in the magazine. Not many
participants were interested in having unknown
artists but a few were interested in having rising
artists.

11. What colours would most appeal to you
on the front cover of a music magazine?

I didn't do a graph for this question because I gave
participants the opportunity to write whichever
colours they wanted without giving them options.

Some examples of colours whicb participants
were: purple, gold, pink, blue, purple, black and
white. Depending on what genre I chose for my music
magazine will affect my choice of colour for the
magazine.

12. From this graph I can see that most of my
participants would want a band on the front cover.
However some people were interesred in having
an individual on their front cover too.

13. From this graph I can see that most of my
participants would want Itunes vouchers included
in the music magazine. However many participants
were interested in promotional codes aswell. Only
a few of my participants were attracted to free
merchandise in the magazine.

14. From this graph I can see that most of
my participants would be interested for up and
coming artists to be included in the magazine as
well as successful well- known artists.

15. My last question showed that the majority

of my participants were interested in having a
live concert list of all the upcoming concerts of my
chosen genre of music magazine.
